How to Patch Drywall Holes Like a Pro

9/4/2024
Drywall holes can be an eyesore, but with the right tools and techniques, you can patch them up like a crazy ol’ ninja. Whether it’s a small nail hole or a larger gash, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you restore your walls to their former glory.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Drywall patch kit or scrap drywall
  • Joint compound (spackle)
  • Drywall tape
  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
  • Putty knife
  • Utility knife
  • Paint and primer
  • Paintbrush or roller

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Assess the Damage:
    • Small Holes (Nail Holes): For tiny holes, you can use a pre-mixed spackle.
    • Medium Holes (1-2 inches): Use a self-adhesive patch or a piece of drywall.
    • Large Holes (over 2 inches): You’ll need a drywall patch and some support behind it.Chunky holes in drywall, about fist size, but too irregular in shape yet clean around the edges to be a fist
  2. Prepare the Area:
    • Clean the area around the hole to remove any loose debris or dust.
    • For larger holes, use a utility knife to cut the hole into a neat square or rectangle. This makes it easier to fit a patch.
  3. Apply the Patch:
    • Small Holes: Apply spackle with a putty knife, smoothing it over the hole. Let it dry, then sand it smooth.
    • Medium Holes: Place a self-adhesive patch over the hole. Apply joint compound over the patch, feathering the edges to blend with the wall. Let it dry, then sand smooth.
    • Large Holes: Cut a piece of drywall to fit the hole. Secure it with drywall screws to the studs or backing strips. Apply drywall tape over the seams, then cover with joint compound. Feather the edges and let it dry. Sand smooth.

  4. Sand and Smooth:
    • Once the compound is dry, sand the area with medium-grit sandpaper, followed by fine-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.
  5. Prime and Paint:
    • Apply a coat of primer to the patched area to seal it. Once the primer is dry, paint over the patch to match the rest of the wall.

Tips for a Ninja-Like Finish:

  • Feathering: Always feather the edges of the joint compound to blend it seamlessly with the wall.
  • Multiple Coats: Apply multiple thin coats of joint compound rather than one thick coat. This helps prevent cracking and ensures a smooth finish.
  • Texture Matching: If your wall has a texture, use a texture spray to match it. Practice on a piece of cardboard first to get the right look.
